Government Funding
How Government Nursery Funding Works
Government funding helps reduce the cost of early years childcare by paying nurseries (or approved childminders/preschools) to deliver a set number of funded hours of early education each week.
Key Funded Entitlements
- 15 Hours Universal Entitlement (All 3- and 4-year-olds)
- Every child in England aged 3 and 4 is entitled to 15 hours per week of free early education for 38 weeks of the year (term-time).
- This entitlement is established in legislation and statutory guidance (via the Childcare Act 2016 and Department for Education guidance).
- 30 Hours Extended Entitlement (Working Families)
- Working parents of 3- and 4-year-olds can qualify for up to 30 hours per week of funded childcare during term time.
- You need to apply and renew eligibility through HMRC and provide your eligibility code to your nursery.
- 15/30 Hours for Younger Children (Expansion 2024–2025)
- From April 2024, eligible working parents of 2-year-olds became entitled to 15 funded hours per week.
- From September 2024, this expanded to eligible working parents of children from 9 months old up to 3 years.
- From September 2025, eligible working parents of children aged 9 months up to school age can access up to 30 funded hours per week during term time.

Key Person Approach
It is a mandatory requirement for every child to be allocated a key person in an early years setting. The key person will play a key role in your child's life. Research demonstrates how important this is. We want to create a 'triangle of trust' between you, your child and ourselves, as key persons.
The key person will get to know you and your child really well, finding out about your child’s interests, preferences and routines and will be the person that shares information with you about what your child has done during their time here. They also share information about their learning and development.
The key person role is important and our aim is to work collaboratively with you and your child to help every child to reach their full potential and succeed in life.
You are welcome to contact your child's key person via phone or via our 'Parentzone' app or alternatively arrange a meeting with them.
As your child grows and develops and transitions across our age groups they will settle and bond with a new key person. Please do keep us informed of any changes we may needs to be aware so that we can support your child to the best they can be.
If you child attends an additional setting to Woodlands please do pass us on the details of this so we can work and communicate together.
In addition to this information you may also find it useful to visit our section about 'Parentzone' where you will find further information about our communication app.
Our Key Policies
Local Offer - Woodlands Is a fantastic nursery to care for your children....
Independent Nursery
Woodlands Day Nursery is a spacious purpose-built independent nursery, located in a woodland setting on the edge of Greenham Business Park on the A339.
The Nursery is accessible via a slope leading up to a double front door, with no steps and wide corridors creating a wide and easily accessible setting.
The Nursery is built on one level and consists of 4 Nursery rooms, training room, large kitchen, staff room and an office area. It is set in spacious grounds with outside areas for each of the 4 Nursery rooms, promoting free flow across the age groups; one of these areas is set on an upper level accessible via outside steps and a ramp via the side gate.
There is also a nature garden and vegetable/fruit garden on site, used to expand the children’s opportunities to explore nature and bring current indoor learning to the outside. The willow dens and ponds furthermore add to the endless opportunities for the children to stretch their imagination and encourage outdoor learning.
Smooth Running
The Nursery Manager is responsible with the support of a Deputy Manager for the smooth running of the nursery. Within each room there is a Room Senior who is responsible for overseeing the day to day running of the rooms of which they work in.
We currently have 24 adults working within the Nursery, 2 of which are qualified teachers, one who works within the preschool room and one who is our qualified SENCO and Education Manager.
We have 17 level 3 qualified staff members, 2 level 2 qualified staff member and 1 training towards level 2 qualification.
We also employ 2 further support staff, 1 of which is our chef who works with a kitchen and 1 of which is our housekeeper.
We are committed to ensuring that all members of staff are provided with a range of training opportunities that both meet the standard requirements and that seek to develop them as outstanding practitioners.
High Quality
The Nursery is committed to providing high quality care and education to all our children, striving to ensure we provide a stimulating environment based upon the needs and interests of the children.
Each of our rooms are provided with resources to meet each area of the curriculum, with areas within the rooms used to support these, such as a role play area and a creative area. Staff are also encouraged to ensure each area is used across the curriculum, including maths opportunities outside through our nature cards which seek to encourage number, shape and measuring as well as creative/imaginative skills being encouraged within various areas such as the role play area, mark making area and through adult led learning opportunities.
We aim to take our inside learning outside as well as bringing our outdoor learning inside, encouraging children to explore, investigate and make links in their learning. We strive to ensure children are provided with real life experiences, with children within our preschool room taking part in a First Aid course and all children getting the chance to see a explore a Fire engine! We frequently expand the children’s understanding of everyday experiences such as hospitals, shopping and travel through discussions, role play and books...
Supporting Diversity
The diversity of our children and our society is recognised at all times, with many festivals being celebrated; supported by a range of resources.
Children are provided with opportunities to share their personal experiences of different cultures as well as being encouraged to explore these within the nursery.
The diversity of languages is encouraged throughout the nursery with parents asked to provide details of any additional languages their child may speak, these are then used to support the children within their setting, working closely with the parents to see if the use of additional languages are needed to support their child with key vocabulary.
Our Mission Statement
At Woodlands we aim to provide a home from home nurturing caring experience where every child matters as they gain the foundations to secure them for their future success.
We believe every child is capable of learning, we balance risk with learning opportunities to enable the best experiences to help every child to thrive and reach their full potential.
Outdoor learning is integral to Woodlands with free play, fresh air and plenty of exposure to the natural world. In addition to the outdoor learning experience, we aim to enrich learning in a play focused environment full of rich experiences where children can take part, think for themselves, gain knowledge, become resilient, gain skills that will lay a secure foundation on their next journey.
When children leave Woodlands to move onto school, they do with confidence in their abilities, excitement about their next steps and when this happens we say mission accomplished.

Wider Community
Links with the wider community/enhancement activities
At Woodlands Day Nursery we are continuing to develop our links with the wider community and ensure that the children benefit from a broad range of experiences.
Weekly Boogie Mites
Our weekly Boogie Mites sessions enable children to explore music in a safe environment, with enjoyment at the heart of it all. Each term they are taken on a magical musical journey, with themes running alongside the nurseries current focuses and enabling each child to make progress across the session. Lizzie Lock runs our Boogie Mites sessions across every room within the nursery, enabling the children to become familiar with her and progress their musical skills as they move between the rooms, building upon skills that they have learnt.
“Boogie Mites tried-and-tested Music Programmes provide the ultimate resource for giving children the opportunity to boost learning, development and wellbeing through music.” BoogieMites.co.uk
Weekly Sports Session
We also run a weekly sports session through FootySkills4Kids run by Lawrence who provides sessions that cover a wide range of sports, building the children’s physical skills week on week and embedding the importance of physical activity. We currently run these sessions within both our Hedgehogs and Squirrels rooms throughout the year, supporting the children with not only their physical ability but also their personal social and emotional skills within group games.
Christmas 2022
Each year at Woodlands we link closely with the Food Bank and take part in their annual Christmas appeal. In 2022 we are took part in their 12 days of Christmas campaign and in early December took five of our preschool children to deliver all the donations we had collected. Upon delivering our donations, we were given a guided tour of the warehouse, providing the children with a wonderful insight into the job that all the volunteers do daily and how we can all help to support our community. Please keep an eye out for all the wonderful festive experiences and activities we do at Woodlands.
Kennet & Avon Waterways Organisation
We have also recently made links with the Kennet & Avon Waterways Organisation who are planning to visit us in the new year and adapting their current River School ARK project that many schools around West Berkshire benefit from and providing a more tailored session for Squirrels who will learn all about how we can help to protect the wildlife that live within and around the water.
Other Charities
We are proud to sponsor Newbury Rugby Club and Falkland Cricket Club.
The nursery is also extremely passionate about supporting charities and take part in regular fundraising for a range of charities from Children in Need to The Alzheimer’s Society and more recently we have become involved in with The Children’s Air Ambulance. Within our main car park, we currently have a clothing bank in aid of The Children’s Air Ambulance and are looking forward to our ‘Big wear it green’ charity day, where not only do we all get involved by wearing something green for the day but we also get to meet the charities mascot Blade!
